When children first learn speech, they don’t start off learning grammar rules, but they still learn how to speak. When Japanese Violinist Dr. Shinichi Suzuki investigated this phenomenon, hoping to apply it to music, he discovered that children effortlessly learned their native language through listening, imitation, and immersion. Today, speech-language pathology and developmental neuroscience research have also come to a similar conclusion: repetition, rhythm, and recitation directly engage the neural pathways responsible for speech control and auditory processing.


Speech requires the brain to coordinate 100s of muscles for breathing, producing sound, and articulating the letters and words– all within 1 second.


When children practice repetitive speech, children slowly become fluent in their articulation, fluency, and memory.


Speech articulation relies on motor planning–the brain’s ability to organize muscle movement to create speech. To improve speech articulation, children need to practice speech in such a way that they only need to focus on articulation, which is where repetitive verses become important. Because children most likely have a repetitive verse memorized, they focus less on what to say and instead focus on how to articulate the verse smoothly. This technique relies on the neurological concept of “muscle memory”--or more formally known as speech motor automation. By repeating the same thing continuously, the brain builds automated neural pathways to help the mouth coordinate sounds more efficiently.



The Motor Theory of Speech Perception suggests that the brain breaks down speech by mimicking the mouths’ movements. When speech becomes rhythmic, following a beat or pattern, the brain maps the speech to the lips, tongue, and jaw movements to learn how to produce them. Doing this allows the brain to isolate and organize individual speech sounds better, creating the foundation for clear speech.



Speech requires controlled inhalation and exhaustion, especially in longer conversations. Rhythmic repetition acts like a metronome, helping children time their breaths in a way that least interferes with their speech. This is especially helpful for children who speak too fast or have speech irregularities, as rhythm encourages them to speak slower and smoother to maintain the rhythm.


While structured repetition can offer vital speech development for children, it’s critical to understand its benefits and the benefits of clinical therapeutic intervention.


Rhythmic recitation can build better speech control and auditory processing, but they can not treat speech disorders such as Childhood Apraxia of Speech, dysarthria, or significant speech delays. These require individualized assessments and clinically proven treatment plans created by Speech-Language Pathologists. Rhythmic recitation should never replace a Speech-Language Pathologist as it can never fix the underlying issues of speech disorders, whereas a Speech-Language Pathologist can.


Despite that, rhythmic recitation can be a vital tool for general speech improvement, and below are guidelines to maximize that benefit:


Incorporate kinesthetic cues. When words are paired with physical movement(clapping, marching, or tapping), it can strengthen how the brain understands speech rhythm.

Focus on the overall speech instead of a single mistake: Avoid interrupting a child when they are speaking to correct a singular mistake. Allow them to first finish the rhythmic phrase, then gently offer constructive feedback with specific examples on how to fix the mistake.

Increase the rhythmic phrase length systematically. Start with small, 2-line phrases before advancing to longer and more complex phrases. This will prevent children from being stressed and tired when speaking, especially since their muscles are still developing

Monitor for strain or fatigue. Speech should never be physically demanding to the muscles or the vocal cords. If a child shows signs of hoarseness or fatigue, pause the activity and allow the child to take a break until they feel better.


If a child consistently shows signs of speech problems well after the expected age of development, struggles to be understood by peers and adults, or shows signs of stress while speaking, schedule an evaluation with a certified Speech-Language Pathologist.


Repetitive recitation is far more than a simple childhood memory game. When utilizing rhythm, repetition, and supportive guidance, structured speech practice gives children the tools to explore their own voice–building clarity and confidence in their speech. As you explore rhythmic practice with your children at home, in schools, or in the community, remember that progress comes from consistent habits. By pairing rhythmic practice with professional guidance as needed, we can help every child find their voice.


 
 
 

Growing up, I faced a challenge that shaped much of my early life: difficulty with speech. Speaking clearly and confidently did not come naturally to me. I often found myself struggling to express thoughts, feeling frustrated and isolated. This is the story of how I moved from those early struggles to a place of confidence, and how that journey inspired me to help others find their own voices.


Early Struggles and Frustration


As a child, I noticed that speaking was harder for me than for my peers. Simple conversations could feel like mountains to climb. I would stumble over words, hesitate, and sometimes avoid speaking altogether. This made social situations stressful and left me feeling disconnected.


Teachers and classmates didn’t always understand what I was going through. Sometimes, I was mistaken for being shy or uninterested, but the truth was that I was battling with my own speech. This misunderstanding added to my frustration and made me retreat further into silence.


Finding Support and Taking Small Steps


The turning point came when a speech therapist entered my life. With patience and encouragement, I began to understand that speech difficulties were not a reflection of my worth or intelligence. The therapist introduced me to exercises that improved my articulation and breathing, helping me gain control over my voice.


I also learned the importance of practice and persistence. Speaking in front of a mirror, reading aloud, and recording myself were small but powerful steps. Each effort built a little more confidence. I realized that progress was not about perfection but about steady improvement.


Lessons Learned Along the Way


This journey taught me several important lessons:


  • Patience is essential. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time to build new skills and habits.

  • Self-compassion matters. Being kind to myself during setbacks helped me stay motivated.

  • Support makes a difference. Having someone believe in me, whether a therapist, family member, or friend, was crucial.

  • Practice builds confidence. The more I spoke, the easier it became.


These lessons extended beyond speech. They shaped how I approached challenges in other areas of life.


Discovering My Voice and Purpose


As my speech improved, so did my confidence. I started participating more in class, joining clubs, and even speaking in front of groups. Each experience reinforced that my voice mattered.


This transformation inspired me to help others facing similar challenges. I began volunteering with local organizations that support people with speech difficulties. Sharing my story and encouraging others became a way to give back and continue growing.


Practical Tips for Others Facing Speech Challenges


If you or someone you know struggles with speech, here are some practical tips that helped me:


  • Seek professional help. A speech therapist can provide personalized guidance.

  • Practice regularly. Use reading aloud, tongue twisters, or recording your voice.

  • Focus on breathing. Controlled breathing supports clearer speech.

  • Join supportive groups. Connecting with others who understand can boost morale.

  • Celebrate progress. Recognize small victories to stay motivated.


Remember, everyone’s journey is unique. What worked for me might need adjustment for you, but the key is to keep moving forward.


Embracing Confidence Beyond Speech


Overcoming speech challenges was not just about talking better. It was about believing in myself and embracing my abilities. Confidence grew from within, fueled by persistence and support.


Today, I continue to work on my communication skills, knowing that growth is ongoing. More importantly, I use my experience to encourage others to find their voices and share their stories.


 
 
 

Did you know that recent studies found that  AI-generated misinformation and disinformation could cost the global economy billions by undermining trust in markets and institutions? AI has the ability to create convincing arguments that are false. This is spreading misinformation rapidly across the internet. This technology can impact public trust, business decisions, political representation, and even global markets. AI misinformation can mislead people, influence opinions, and distort reality, making it harder to know what’s true. This threatens informed decision-making and can harm trust in media, institutions, and society. From the economic lens of AI misinformation, it can have serious financial consequences, affecting markets, businesses, and consumer behavior.

My research question is, “How can the use of generative AI impact the economy by spreading misinformation and disinformation?”. This question is important because AI has the ability to rapidly create and distribute false information. This can lead to economic instability, disrupted markets, and harmed businesses. All in all, affecting the global economy. First, it has the potential for AI to boost productivity and innovation. Second, the risks of AI spreading misinformation, which can disrupt industries and harm businesses economically. Lastly, the concerns about AI's ability to manipulate financial markets.

AI has the potential to revolutionize business operations by automating tasks and improving efficiency in areas such as customer service and software development. A report by McKinsey & Company, a leading global management consulting firm, indicates that generative AI could add between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy by enhancing productivity. “Generative AI can add $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion… the United Kingdom’s GDP in 2021 was $3.1 trillion. This would increase the impact of AI by 15-40 percent” (Mckinsey Digital 7). Given this information, we can conclude that generative AI has the potential to significantly boost the global economy. The estimated increase of $4.4 trillion annually suggests that businesses can use this technology to improve efficiency. This economic growth could lead to new job opportunities, which shows how generative AI is not just a technological advancement, but also a critical factor for future economic development. By understanding its potential, stakeholders can prepare for changes in the workforce and the overall economy.

AI can play a crucial role in transforming the workplace by automating routine tasks, allowing employees to focus on more complex and creative aspects of their jobs. According to a study by the World Economic Forum, a prominent organization known for its global economic research, automation and AI are expected to displace 85 million jobs globally by 2025 but also create 97 million new roles that require advanced skills. The study emphasizes that, “technology adoption will transform tasks, jobs, and skills by 2025, but this will also bring about challenges as job displacement could outpace job creation” (Zahidi 10). Given this information, we can conclude that while AI will automate many current job functions, there is also significant potential for new roles that demand human skills and creativity, necessitating workforce adaptation. This view compares to that of the second perspective in that it addresses job displacement risks, but also introduces the idea that AI will create new opportunities, contrasting with the second perspective's more pessimistic focus on economic consequences.

AI-generated misinformation can damage consumer confidence, leading to a ripple effect that negatively impacts market stability and economic growth. According to the U.S. News the rise of AI-driven misinformation has made it easier for misleading information to spread rapidly across platforms, which can cause stock prices to fluctuate unexpectedly. “ On May 20, an AI-generated picture depicted smoke from a government building near the Pentagon…false statements, particularly in cryptocurrency markets…temporarily affected market activity, and investors” (Ward 10). Due to this misinformation, we can see how easily investors can be influenced by what they see online. The AI-generated image created a sense of fear, leading people to react quickly and possibly make poor investment choices. This shows that when false information spreads, it can cause real harm to the market and hurt investors who are trying to make smart decisions.

The increasing prevalence of AI-generated misinformation not only distorts market perceptions, but also damages investor confidence, leading to more volatility in markets. According to a 2023 article by Forbes, a global media company focusing on business and technology, misinformation and disinformation generated by AI are increasingly being used to manipulate stock prices and influence trading decisions. Forbes states, "AI-driven disinformation has already impacted stock markets, leading to temporary price fluctuations and long-term damage to investor trust in the stability of financial institutions" (Reily, 7). Given this information, we can conclude that AI-generated misinformation presents a serious risk to market stability, as investors may act on false information, causing rapid shifts in market dynamics. This view compares to that of the first perspective regarding individual investor impacts but also emphasizes the broader consequences for institutional trust and long-term market performance.

AI has the potential to worsen socioeconomic inequalities by benefiting certain groups while leaving others behind. According to a study published in PNAS Nexus, a prestigious journal known for its interdisciplinary research, the authors, including leading economists and social scientists like Valerio Capraro, explain how generative AI can increase inequalities in various domains such as work, education, and healthcare. “Socioeconomic inequalities in three key areas: work, education, and healthcare…the benefits and costs (of AI) will likely be distributed unevenly…it also raises concerns about equal access to these advanced tools.” (Capraro 5). Given this information, we can conclude that the unequal distribution of benefits from generative AI will widen the existing gaps in socioeconomic status. The fact that larger firms and certain demographics may gain more from AI technologies means that those who are already disadvantaged could fall further behind. This highlights the need for policies that ensure equitable access to AI tools and resources, so that all individuals and businesses can benefit from advancements in technology, rather than just a select few.

The uneven distribution of AI's advantages raises significant concerns about its impact on vulnerable populations, particularly in how it can widen gaps in education and healthcare access. According to a report by the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy organization known for its research on economic and social issues, "AI is poised to reinforce and even exacerbate inequality in areas such as education and healthcare, where access and quality are already unevenly distributed." The report emphasizes that without intentional policy interventions, "the benefits of AI will likely accrue to more affluent populations and regions, further entrenching disparities" (Graham 20). Given this information, we can conclude that while generative AI offers the potential to revolutionize industries, it also poses significant risks of deepening socioeconomic divides. The uneven distribution of its benefits, particularly in sectors like healthcare and education, underscores the urgent need for policies that ensure equal access and address these growing disparities. This view compares to that it acknowledges the potential of AI for innovation but stresses the importance of addressing inequalities to prevent further social fragmentation.

In conclusion, the discussion around the impact of generative AI on the economic impact shows the urgent need for new policies and equitable access to technology. Understanding both the pros and cons associated with AI is essential for ensuring that advancements contribute to a farrier society, rather than widening existing divides. One perspective emphasizes its potential to increase access and enhance productivity while the other highlights the risk of increasing existing inequalities. Despite their differences, both perspectives acknowledge the transformative nature of AI and stress the importance of implementing thoughtful policies to mitigate its adverse effects. I believe that AI is driving the spread of economic misinformation. This is because AI is still in its early stages and is prone to creating false narratives without realizing, as the author of the U.S. News article calls it, “AI Hallucinations”.
